USS SUNBIRD was the eighth CHANTICLEER - class Submarine Rescue Ship. Accepted by the Navy and subsequently inactivated, the SUNBIRD was towed to the Charleston Naval Shipyard on January 15, 1947, where she remained for the following three years. SUNBIRD was commissioned at New London, Conn., on June 23, 1950, and joined the Atlantic Fleet. Decommissioned on September 30, 1993, after 43 years of service, the SUNBIRD was stricken from the Navy list on November 2, 1993, and is now berthed at the National Defense Reserve Fleet, James River, Fort Eustis, Va., awaiting final disposal.
