Delivered in 1969 as SS MORMACSKY, the ship entered civilian service for Moore-McCormack Lines and was later renamed SS GREAT REPUBLIC. From December 17, 1985 - July 3, 1987, the ship underwent a conversion to an Aviation Maintenance Logistics Ship at Todd Shipyards, Galveston, Tx., and was renamed and placed in service as SS CURTISS (T-AVB 4) on August 18, 1987. Subsequently, the CURTISS was assigned to the Ready Reserve Force and - when activated - is tasked to provide support for US Marine Corps aircraft. The ship is presently held in reduced operation status at San Diego, Calif., able to be fully activated within 5 days.
