USNS GUAM was originally built for Hawaii Superferry as HUAKAI. Completed in September 2008, HUAKAI was laid up in 2009 when Hawaii Superferry ceased operations. On September 13, 2010, the ferry was purchased by the US Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration for $25 milion. On January 27, 2012, Marad transferred the ship to the US Navy as the Navy was looking for vessels for transport duties around Okinawa. HUAKAI was renamed and designated as GUAM (T-HST 1) in May 2012
