History of USS PATRIOT:

USS PATRIOT was commissioned December 13, 1991 at Charleston Naval Station, South Carolina. With the consolidation of all mine countermeasures ships at Ingleside, Texas, to create a "Mine Warfare Center of Excellence", PATRIOT changed homeport in August 1993.

In 1994, during a routine deployment to the Pacific in company with USS GUARDIAN (MCM 5) to participate in regular fleet exercises, PATRIOT and GUARDIAN were called upon to continue westward to Sasebo, Japan. In August of that year, mine countermeasures rotation crews were formed to man this forward-deployed ship for periods of six months. These crews trained at Ingleside in other ships of the class and then deployed to Sasebo.

In February 1996, Sasebo officially became PATRIOT's and GUARDIAN's new homeport. With that, came a permanent crew. PATRIOT and GUARDIAN now participate in a rigorous schedule of mine countermeasures (MCM) exercises in support of Seventh Fleet objectives. This includes regular operations with both the Republic of Korea Navy and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force.
