USS Permit (SSN 594)

Basically the second THRESHER - class nuclear-powered attack submarine, the PERMIT became the lead ship and namesake of her class after the loss of USS THRESHER (SSN 593) on April 10, 1963. Named after the fish, the USS PERMIT was the second ship in the Navy to bear the name. Both decommissioned and stricken from the Navy list on July 23, 1991, the PERMIT entered the Navy's Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash., on September 30, 1991. Recycling was completed on May 20, 1993.

Accidents aboard USS PERMIT:

USS PERMIT is run over by the cargo ship HAWAIIAN CITIZEN while the submarine is on a submerged test. A Navy spokesman said the only damage to the PERMIT was a bending of the doors to the conning tower.
198230 miles off San Francisco, Calif.
In late 1982, USS PERMIT, cruising on the surface, collides with USS LA JOLLA (SSN 701), at periscope depth, while they are on sea trials off San Francisco. The PERMIT receives a ten-foot-long, three-foot-wide "scrape" in the paint on the keel, while LA JOLLA suffers minor rudder damage.
